How to Take a Screenshot on Mac

Using Keyboard Shortcuts
One of the easiest and most commonly used methods to take a screenshot on a Mac is by using keyboard shortcuts. Here are the steps to take a screenshot using keyboard shortcuts:
- Press the Command (⌘) + Shift + 3 keys together to capture the entire screen. The screenshot will be saved on your desktop by default.
- If you want to capture a specific area of the screen, press the Command (⌘) + Shift + 4 keys together. The cursor will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag the crosshair to select the area you want to capture. Release the mouse button to take the screenshot. Again, the screenshot will be saved on your desktop by default.
- If you want to capture a specific window or menu, press the Command (⌘) + Shift + 4 keys together, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will turn into a camera icon. Click on the window or menu you want to capture. The screenshot will be saved on your desktop by default.
Using the Grab Tool
Another method to take a screenshot on a Mac is by using the Grab tool. Here’s how you can use it:
- Open the Grab tool by searching for it in Spotlight or by going to Applications > Utilities > Grab.
- Once the Grab tool is open, go to the Capture menu and select the type of screenshot you want to take. You can choose from four options: Selection, Window, Screen, or Timed Screen.
- If you select “Selection,” use the cursor to click and drag over the area you want to capture. If you select “Window,” click on the window you want to capture. If you select “Screen,” the entire screen will be captured. If you select “Timed Screen,” you’ll have 10 seconds to set up the screen before the screenshot is taken.
- Once you’ve selected your capture type, the screenshot will be taken and opened in a new window. You can then save it to your desired location.
Using the Screenshot App
If you’re using a newer version of macOS, you can also use the Screenshot app to take screenshots. Here are the steps:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot app.
- The Screenshot app will open, and you’ll see a menu bar at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can choose to capture the entire screen, a specific window, or a selected portion of the screen.
- If you want to capture the entire screen, click on the “Capture Entire Screen” button (it looks like a square with an arrow pointing upwards).
- If you want to capture a specific window, click on the “Capture Selected Window” button (it looks like a window with an arrow pointing upwards). Then, click on the window you want to capture.
- If you want to capture a selected portion of the screen, click on the “Capture Selected Portion” button (it looks like a square with a dotted outline). Then, click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
- Once you’ve taken the screenshot, it will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. You can click on it to open it in the Preview app, where you can edit and save it.
Taking a Timed Screenshot
Sometimes, you may want to set up a screenshot to be taken a few seconds after you’ve set it up. This can be helpful if you need to set up a specific window or menu before capturing it. Here’s how to take a timed screenshot on a Mac:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot app.
- From the menu bar at the bottom of the screen, click on the “Options” button.
- In the Options menu, select the “Timer” dropdown and choose the number of seconds you want to wait before the screenshot is taken.
- Choose the type of screenshot you want to take, such as “Capture Entire Screen” or “Capture Selected Window.”
- Click on the “Capture” button to start the timer.
- You’ll have the number of seconds you chose to set up the screen. Once the timer is up, the screenshot will be taken automatically and saved to your desktop by default.
Capturing a Specific Window or Menu
Sometimes, you may only want to capture a specific window or menu, rather than the entire screen. Here’s how to capture a specific window or menu on a Mac:
- Press the Command (⌘) + Shift + 4 keys together, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will turn into a camera icon.
- Move the camera icon over the window or menu you want to capture. As you move the cursor over different elements, the window or menu will be highlighted in blue.
- Click on the window or menu you want to capture. The screenshot will be taken and saved to your desktop by default.
If you’re having trouble capturing a specific window or menu, make sure that the window or menu is in the foreground and isn’t covered by other windows or menus. Additionally, some apps may have settings that prevent you from capturing their windows or menus, so you may need to check the app’s preferences or documentation for more information.
